Children and staff at the Notting Hill Adventure Playground based at the Venture Centre have used a small grant from Go Golborne to create a Sugar Smart zone and introduce lots of actions to promote healthy choices.
With over 600 local children on the register the Playground is a hub for local children to play and take part in fun educational activities. Go Golborne’s Sugar Smart campaign provided a great opportunity to give the organisation’s healthy eating policy an extra push and run some focused sessions to raise children’s awareness of sugar guidelines and the dangers of eating and drinking too much.
Over the summer holiday a designated Sugar Smart play worker joined the staff team and organised a host of activities to motivate children to make healthier choices. This included the introduction of a new healthy hot lunch menu to encourage children to eat on-site and reduce the temptation to visit local shops to buy sugary drinks and snacks. In partnership with the Golborne Community Champions lots of fun sugar-themed health promotion sessions took place including a Sugar Smart scavenger hunt, playground games, healthy cooking workshops and an awards ceremony to reward children for their commitment to making healthier choices. Parents were also engaged in the changes and their feedback on the new healthy eating policy has been overwhelmingly positive.
Reflecting on the Sugar Smart activities, Pattrina Quashie-Ferguson, Children’s Services Manager said: "We work with hundreds of children and were concerned about the amount of sugary food and drink they were bringing into the playground. The changes we have made is making it easier for children to make healthy choices and encouraging them to have similar expectations about what they can eat and drink here as they do at school - we are gradually helping to make healthy choices the norm."
